In Chandigarh, an advisory discourages visits to key tourist attractions – Rock Garden, Bird Park, and Sukhna Lake – during weekends and public holidays due to escalating traffic congestion. To address this issue, the administration introduces a CTU shuttle bus service for tourist places, operating from 11 am to 8 pm on weekends and public holidays starting November 18. Tourists are urged to adhere to the issued advisory, which includes strict guidelines.
Additionally, regular public vehicle entry on the road leading to Sukhna Lake is restricted on weekends. The administration notes a surge in weekend tourists, causing traffic snarls around the attractions and adjacent sectors. To mitigate this, a map is provided to guide visitors and prevent them from getting stuck in traffic.
There are only three parking spaces available.
Visitors will find only three designated parking areas. Tourists arriving in private vehicles are informed about two parking lots near Sukhna Lake and Rock Garden, based on availability. If these are full, overflow parking is provided in the makeshift area near the High Court and behind government offices in Sector-9A, ensuring space for shuttle bus service.
You can avail the advantage of the bus service here.
The shuttle bus service for tourist places operates near the makeshift parking by the High Court and behind Sector 9A offices on weekends and public holidays, departing every five minutes. A nominal fee of Rs 10 is charged for the round trip. Convenient pick-up and drop-off points are available near Rock Garden, Gursagar Sahib Mod, Sukhna Lake, and ATC Light.
Access to the lake road is not possible from these routes.
Access to the lake road is restricted from certain roads. Tourists are advised to follow the Green Route on Jan Marg and Vigyan Marg during weekends and then visit Rock Garden, Bird Park, and Sukhna Lake accordingly. Sukhna Lake enforces a no-vehicle zone from point A to B, with a designated return route. Direct access to Sukhna Lake is prohibited from Sector 5,6,7,8 Chowk, Sector 5,8 Chowk, Sector 4,5,8,9 Chowk, and Sector 4 Tank Chowk. Only residents of Sector 4 and 5 are permitted to bring vehicles. The roads around the three tourist spots are designated as ‘tow away zones.’
Restricted Routes: No Access to Sukhna Lake from these Directions
Travelers from Kaimbwala village and Gurudwara Gursahib are advised against taking a left turn towards Sukhna Lake. Additionally, all private tourist buses will be directed to park in the makeshift area near by the High Court. Only vehicles originating from Haryana Raj Bhawan and UT Guest will be permitted to enter and exit from Sector 5,6,7,8 Chowk.
