People with five unpaid traffic violations will lose their drivers’ license as per Chandigarh authorities.
To curb the disturbing number of 750,000 challans yet to be cleared, the UT Administration has decided to send notices to vehicle owners with so many unpaid challans. Vehicle owners are then required to pay the dues within a stipulated 15 days.
As per the Chandigarh regional transport authority, individuals with more than five such violations will be given a 15-day warning period. After the period of time has passed, it will be mandatory to confiscate their drivers’ licenses in addition to registering the vehicles.
The registration certificates of those vehicle owners who refuse to pay the fines will be seized and their drivers’ permits will remain valid as a gesture of mercy.
The city has accumulated approximately 750,00 unpaid challans within 3 years, which led to the need for an updated policy.
According to Pradhuman Singh, HCS, Registering & Licensing Authority (RLA), a considerable number of drivers have still not paid the fines, this includes speeding, jumping red lights, and aggressive driving, after several reminders. Hence, Chandigarh Administrators decided to remove violators who have more than five unsatisfied challans as they need to give such drivers a strong warning.
Section supervisor Pradhuman Singh remarked, “It is very disturbing that violators disregard speeding, running red lights, and reckless driving tickets even after receiving notices and gentle reminders.” This observation was made in relation to the sharp increase in unpaid challans over the years.
Further, he noted that the offenders’ vehicles will be flagged as ‘non-permissible’ preventing any possible transactions like ownership change, registration certificate renewals, issuance of duplicate registration certificates, PUC, and insurance, until the fines are resolved or the penalties are paid.
Moreover, the violators vehicles with five or more unpaid challans will have the fine notices issued to them and subjected to paying the penalties within 15 days otherwise licenses may be revoked and RCs are also likely to be suspended.
Last year, the traffic police collected 22.69 crore in fines. This year, 9.68 lakh challans were issued. Of these, 1,40,286 occurred through violator on-the-spot enforcement devices while the rest 8,28,672 challans were issued using ITMS cameras.
