A report by Foundit (before Monster APAC & ME) looked at job trends in India’s travel and tourism sectors from August 2022 to August 2023.
The travel and tourism industry had experienced strong growth of 16% in 2019 before the pandemic. But the travel ban and lockdown presented serious difficulties for this industry, leading to a 47% drop in job postings in 2020 and another 27% decline in 2021.
Foundit Report on Travel and Tourism
The year 2024 has seen a notable recovery, even though the industry began slowly recovering in 2022 with a barely 3% increase in hiring. The government’s efforts and the public’s growing confidence in travel may serve as a boost for the travel business, according to the Foundit report. The invaluable wellness sector in India has made a major contribution to medical tourism.
Sekhar Garisa, CEO of Foundit, said, “The travel & tourism industry has truly bounced back from the pandemic with a boom. And driven significantly by government initiatives focused on infrastructural development and heritage promotion.”
Additionally, he emphasized how developing technologies like augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) are boosting the sector’s growth and improving visitor experiences.
Most Demand for Sales and Business Developers
The top job roles in demand across the travel and tourism industry include sales & business development. And they make up 23% of total demand, followed by software and electrical engineers at 12%
Other jobs in demand include marketing & communication at 8%, while roles like chefs (5%) and medical representatives (5%) account for a considerable share of demand.
Expanding Gig Economy
Additionally, since January 2023, there has been a 14% increase in gig roles in the travel and tourism sector, according to Foundit data. This is because businesses are using the gig economy model to address specialized needs and fluctuating demand.
Tour guides, interpreters, photographers, and event planners are among the gig workers in this sector that allow businesses to get the necessary skills when needed, especially during seasonal variations.
In this field, gigs might include anything from tour guides and translators to photographers and event planners hired on a project-by-project basis. By doing this, the industry is guaranteed access to the appropriate knowledge when it is needed.
