Chandigarh Declares Special Casual Leave for May 25, Holiday on June 1

The UT Administration has taken measures to accommodate voters participating in the Lok Sabha elections in Haryana and Punjab parliamentary constituencies. In light of the voting days on May 25 and June 1, respectively, a special casual leave on May 25 and a public holiday on June 1 have been announced for eligible employees.

These provisions are enacted under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.

Democratic Rights

This decision extends to employees registered as voters in the specified constituencies, ensuring they have the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights without hindrance.

Moreover, the special casual leave and holiday are extended as paid time off for industrial shops, commercial establishments, and daily wage employees or casual workers, acknowledging the importance of civic participation in the electoral process.

Additionally, June 1 will be observed as a dry day across the Union Territory of Chandigarh. To uphold this mandate, the Excise and Taxation Commissioner has directed the closure of all liquor vends/shops in Chandigarh and specified areas along the inter-state borders.

This closure will be enforced from 6 pm on May 30 to 6 pm on June 1. On the day of counting, June 4, the entirety of the day will be designated as a dry day in areas within 3 km of the inter-state borders with Haryana and Punjab.

Special Casual Leave

During these specified dry days, strict regulations will be enforced to prohibit the sale, distribution, or provision of spirituous, fermented, or intoxicating liquors or substances of a similar nature. This ban extends to various establishments, including hotels, restaurants,

taverns, clubs, community centers, CSD canteens, and shops, as well as public or private places within Chandigarh and the specified border areas. These measures aim to ensure a smooth and orderly electoral process while upholding public safety and civic responsibility.
