People with five unpaid traffic violations will lose their drivers’ license as per the Chandigarh authorities.
In order to curb the disturbing number of around 750,000 challans yet to be cleared, the UT Administration has decided to send out notices to vehicle owners with so many unpaid challans. Vehicle owners are then required to clear the dues in a stipulated period of 15 days.
As per the Chandigarh regional transport authority, individuals who have more than five of such violations will be given a warning period of 15 days. After the passage of this duration, it will be mandatory to seize their drivers’ permits alongside registering the vehicles.
The registration certificates of those vehicle owners who refuse to pay the fines will be seized their drivers’ permits allowed to remain valid as a gesture of mercy.
The city has accumulated approximately 750,00 unpaid challans within the time frame of 3 years which unearthed the need for a new policy.
According to Pradhuman Singh, HCS, Registering & Licensing Authority (RLA), a considerable number of the drivers have still not paid the fines, this include the speeding, jumping red lights, and aggressive driving, after several reminders. Hence, a decision was made by Chandigarh Administrators with regard to people removing their violators who have more than five unsatisfied challans as there is a need to give such drivers a strong warning.
Section supervisor Pradhuman Singh remarked, “It is very disturbing that violators disregard speeding, running red lights, and reckless driving tickets even after receiving notices and gentle reminders.” This observation was made in relation to the sharp increase in the number of unpaid challans which has been seen over the years.
Further, he noted that the offenders vehicles will be flagged as ‘non-permissible’ preventing any possible transactions like ownership change, registration certificate renewals, issuance of duplicate registration certificates, PUC, and insurance, until the fines are resolved or the penalties are paid.
Moreover, the violators vehicles with five or more unpaid challans will having the fine notices issued to them subjected to paying the penalties within 15 days otherwise licenses may be revoked and RCs are also likely to be suspended.
Last year, traffic police in the city collected in excess of ₹22.69 crore in fines. This year, a total of 9.68 lakh challans were issued of which 1,40,286 occurred through the violator on-the-spot enforcement devices while the rest 8,28,672 challans, were issued using ITMS cameras.
