The new parking system in Chandigarh includes some key features that discuss in the last general house meeting. These features include a 10-minute free parking period and the exemption of two-wheelers from parking fees. Besides that, an increased charge for four-wheelers begins at Rs 20 in parking lots near malls and rises to a minimum of Rs 90. Likewise, there is an extra charge of Rs. 5 if the parking fee is pay in cash. The parking rates increase in Chandigarh can be a motive to reduce the overcrowding of vehicles at the parking lots.
New Parking Slabs
According to the new slabs proposed by the civic body for “smart parking” in Chandigarh, two-wheelers will get exempt from parking fees. In contrast, four-wheelers will have to pay a new charge. Currently, four-wheelers pay Rs 14 and two-wheelers pay Rs 7 at the civic body’s parking lots. The new system will introduce a 10-minute free parking period. That is to say, there will be no charge if the vehicle enters and exits the parking lot within 10 minutes. The “smart parking” system will include various features such as RFID readers and automatic ticket machines. Additionally, this includes pay stations, POS terminals, and ANPR cameras. Not to mention, Chandigarh now has a total of 91 parking lots.

A clause has added to the new parking system to discourage cash payments by adding a Rs 5 surcharge for commuters who opt to pay the parking fee in cash. Moreover, the new system and parking prices hiked in Chandigarh are mainly for four wheelers. After all, this is the first time such a provision has implemented in the city. For example, if a four-wheeler driver pays Rs 20 in cash, they must also pay Rs 5 in charges, for a total payment of Rs 25. The aim is to promote the use of digital payment methods for parking fees.
Reasons for Implementation
According to a senior officer, from the Chandigarh civic body, the parking rates increase in Chandigarh has implemented to promote digital payments. Furthermore, the officer mentioned that the civic body will establish and manage an escrow account. In fact, the goal of encouraging digital payments is to prevent fraudulent practices such as overcharging. The officer revealed this information during a conversation with members of the media.
