Panchkula Residents Protest Against New Parking Tax

Panchkula residents protested the imposition of a new parking tax against the housing societies. The PMC has approved a tax on all vehicles parked in housing societies. They are angry at the PMC for sending notices requesting property tax for parking spaces in cooperative housing societies. MC had previously sent notices to about 200 residents of the city’s group housing societies. Besides that, authorities requested residents settle property taxes for the communal parking areas. That is why Panchkula residents protest parking tax, saying that we are already paying a lot of taxes and this will increase our expenses. Besides that, they continued that the tax was unfair and would only add to the financial burden on society’s residents.

HOWA Meeting with Officials

Chairman Bharat Hiteshi leads the House Owners Welfare Association (HOWA). Not to mention, he has vocally opposed the imposition of a parking tax in the city. Furthermore, Hiteshi and other association members met with the zonal tax officer, Akash Kapoor, to discuss their issues. Likewise, the delegation objected to the Municipal Corporation. They argued against the inclusion of a parking area tax in the property tax statements of several group housing societies.

Current Situations

After Residents parking tax protest in Panchkula, ZTO Akash Kapoor assured Hiteshi that no parking taxes would get levied. Additionally, he announced that any parking area tax charges imposed for technical reasons would reverse. The Panchkula MC clarified that common parking areas at group housing societies are not subject to property tax due to a “technical error.”

According to MC commissioner Sachin Gupta, “we have been holding camps on different days for corrections. In fact, residents are able to attend the correction camps at the MC offices. Moreover, we hope to complete the tax correction exercise within a week.”

Later on, Panchkula Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal addressed the issue of Panchkula residents protest parking tax. He assured residents that no additional burdens would not get imposed. In addition, he promised to change any individual tax notices that had sent early.
