In Panchkula, India, a school on wheels for children with special needs has reopened after facing a four-year shutdown due to a lack of funding. Dhanwantari Ayurvedic College and Hospital is running the Kalam Express project as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR). Kulbhushan Goyal, mayor of Panchkula, made the decision.
How did it begin?
Notably, before the idea of starting a school on wheels for children with special needs took shape, a study was before conducted. This study observed that children with special challenges residing in slums, rural areas, and rehabilitation colonies of the cities faced a significant issue. Besides that, these children couldn’t attend regular schools to receive an education. Not to mention, they also required various therapies due to their physical limitations. Besides that, there was a need for a novel concept. In fact, this idea aimed to include those who could not afford to leave their homes and were thus confined to them. Likewise, the objective was to integrate them into mainstream society. Furthermore, one of the primary factors discovered is the parents’ inability to provide the necessary care due to a lack of resources and awareness. This results in the children’s ignorance.
